The Original Well at Scarborough House
The hand-dug well on the grounds of Scarborough House was the water source for the main house when it was built in 1821. It sits near the front of the property and has been preserved as part of the estate's original character. The stone surround is intact, and the well is one of the oldest features still standing from the original build. It appears frequently in portrait sessions as a backdrop that communicates the depth and age of the estate.
Scarborough House bought the property in December 2020 and spent the next two years restoring it. The well was one of dozens of original details the team preserved rather than removed. The estate is surrounded by hundreds of acres of active North Carolina farmland in Stantonsburg, NC, about 55 minutes east of Raleigh on US-264 in Wilson County.
