The Durham Hotel Wedding vs. Scarborough House: A Fair Look at Two Very Different NC Venues

The wedding industry expo circuit is interesting. You walk in expecting competition and end up finding community.

In August 2026, we had the chance to meet and network with the events team at The Durham Hotel at a local wedding expo. It was a pleasure. Great people, great property, and a completely different product than what we offer at Scarborough House. That last part is actually the whole point of this article.

We reached out afterward and asked about their wedding pricing. Abby Garcia from their team was kind enough to send us their full catering menus. This article uses that information to give couples a real, honest look at two North Carolina wedding venues that serve different couples for different reasons. No sales pressure. No trash talk. Just what we know as of August 2026.

Quick disclaimer: Pricing at both venues changes. Availability is affected by the time of year, demand, and what is already booked. Always contact both venues directly and get a current proposal before making any decisions. What you read here is a starting point, not a quote.

About The Durham Hotel

The Durham Hotel is a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Durham, NC. It has a distinct urban personality: exposed brick, locally sourced food programs, and a rooftop view of the Bull City skyline. The hotel has three main event spaces available for weddings and private events.

They offer virtual tours for each space so you can explore before visiting in person. If you are looking for a downtown Durham vibe with walkable restaurants and urban energy, this is a legitimate option worth exploring.

One important note: The Durham does not offer a traditional all-inclusive wedding package. Each event is built around a custom proposal based on your guest count, the space you choose, and your food and beverage selections. Catering is exclusive to The Durham Hotel and must be provided and served by their team.

Because all events are custom quoted, there is no single price to compare. What we can do is walk through the catering menu they sent us and show you what a typical wedding reception budget looks like using their published per-person rates.

All pricing below is from their official banquet menus received August 12, 2026. All F&B charges are subject to a 23% service charge and 7.5% NC sales tax. That combination adds roughly 32 percent to every line item before you see a final bill.

Dinner

Dinner includes salad, two sides, and dessert. Guests choose from a set number of entrees:

Entree options include roasted NC pasture-raised chicken, pan seared salmon, slow roasted beef, pasta pomodoro, and roast country pork, among others. Locally sourced proteins are a point of pride for their kitchen.

Bar Service

Bar packages cover 3 hours and include non-alcoholic beverages. Three tiers are available:

Hors d'oeuvres and Appetizer Stations

Passed hors d'oeuvres start at $10 per guest (minimum 15 guests required). Some items carry a surcharge: burrata runs $13 per guest, mini potato cake with crab salad runs $13 per guest. Appetizer stations like cheeseboards and shrimp cocktail are $7.50 per guest.

What Does a Real Wedding Budget Look Like?

Here is what 100 guests would pay for a straightforward dinner reception with passed apps and a premium bar, before room rental fees or any other charges:

ItemPer Guest100 Guests
Dinner (3 entree choices)$78$7,800
Premium open bar (3 hrs)$55$5,500
Passed hors d'oeuvres (basic)$10$1,000
F&B subtotal$14,300
23% service charge$3,289
7.5% NC sales tax$1,319
Total F&B only~$18,908

That is food and drink only. Room rental, audio-visual, decor, photographer, DJ, cake, florals, and transportation are all separate. For couples who want a city hotel wedding, this is the real number to plan around.

About Scarborough House

Scarborough House is a 205-year-old private estate in Stantonsburg, NC, about 57 minutes from Raleigh and 31 minutes from Greenville. We host weddings and private events on the full grounds, which include a covered pavilion, ceremony lawn, pool, fire pits, gardens, and barns.

Our model is different from The Durham in almost every way. When you book Scarborough House for a wedding weekend, you get the entire property from Friday through Sunday. That includes all 13 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, which sleep up to 26 guests on-site. No shared lobby. No strangers in the hallways. The whole estate is yours.

The weekend wedding package is $10,500. That is a flat rate. It covers the venue, the accommodations, and full exclusive use of the grounds. You bring your own caterer, your own bar service, and your own vendors. We do not mark up anything. You pay your vendors directly at whatever rate you negotiate.

Why You Might Choose The Durham Hotel

The Durham makes a lot of sense for certain couples. Here is when we would tell someone to go with them over us.

The Honest Take

Coach Michael Burt says it best: some will, some won't, so what. There is enough business in North Carolina for every venue that is doing this work with integrity. We believe that genuinely.

The Durham Hotel and Scarborough House are not really competing for the same couple. They offer fundamentally different experiences. The right venue is the one that matches what you actually want your wedding to feel like, not just which one has a lower starting number.

That said, we do think couples deserve to understand the full cost picture before they fall in love with a venue. A catering-inclusive model is not inherently cheaper. When you layer a 23% service charge and 7.5% state tax onto food and drink for 100 guests, the numbers climb fast. Know that going in.

If you are still figuring out what you want from a venue, we recommend touring both. Call The Durham. Call us. Talk to real people. The right fit usually becomes obvious once you have stood in the space and talked through what your day actually looks like.
